Community Engagement

Community engagement allows Queenslanders to have a say about policy, programs and services that can affect their lives. The Queensland Government engages with individuals and communities in a number of ways.

Connecting Queensland

Connecting Queensland is a Queensland Government service operated by the State Library of Queensland for free. It can be used by individuals or community organisations to create and develop websites for community purposes and activities.

Petitions

People can make a direct request to Parliament through a petition. A petition is placed before Parliament by a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the petitioners. As well as the traditional paper petition, a petition can now be started or signed online. These are called ePetitions. Internet consultations

The Queensland Government has two major internet sites for online consultation:

• ConsultQld—an online site where government shares information and can hear your views on issues that you are concerned about.

• Generate—an Internet site for young people aged between 15 and 25 to have a say on issues that impact on them.

Attending Community Cabinet meetings

The Premier, the Cabinet and senior public servants meet with members of the community in different places across Queensland. At Community Cabinet meetings, individuals and community groups can make formal approaches to Ministers or chat informally over a cup of tea at a community gathering.

Attending Ministerial Regional Community Forums

Forums provide Queensland communities with the opportunity to have their say on issues that directly affect them and ensure that their voices are heard by Government. For more information on Ministerial Regional Community Forums phone 1800 102 225.

Attending Parliament

You can attend in person on the days that Parliament meets. Alternatively you can listen to parliamentary broadcasting via the Internet.

Your Member of Parliament represents you and others in your electoral area in the Queensland Parliament.. You may request a meeting or you can phone, email or write to your Member of Parliament. Go to www.parliament.qld.gov.au for contact details of the Member of Parliament in your area.

The Department of Communities publishes a suite of community engagement guides aimed at supporting the public sector as well as communities.

Engaging Queenslanders

Managing Community Engagement program has been developed to provide advice, tools and access to resources for people, particularly managers, who engage with or supervise employees who engage with the community in their work. The program is available as an online learning module through the Government Online Learning Delivery Program.
