In your workplace, information is often displayed in different forms of print media, such as:
- newspaper articles
Some material may appear to be a joke or just for fun, but you need to ask yourself:
- Will certain groups feel offended by particular material?
- Will people feel that they are being discriminated against because of the material?
- Will people misinterpret the meaning of the material?
If you are unsure, it is better not to display the material in order to avoid any misunderstanding between your service, co-workers and clients.
Culturally and socially insensitive print or other visual displays may cause:
- upset or resentment in CALD clients or co-workers, or clients and co-workers with a disability
- difficulties in building rapport and positive working relationships
- anxiety, anger or even hostility
- misunderstanding and conflict between workers and CALD clients or clients with a disability.
Culturally sensitive print material: Do some research in your work area to find a range of print material for cross-cultural communication. Make notes on whether each item is culturally sensitive and appropriate and any suggestions you have for improving the material.
