Units of Competency

This resource has been produced for the Department of Communities and Disability Services Queensland by Brisbane North Institute of TAFE. This E-learning program was made possible through funding provided by the Strengthening Non-government Organisations project.

The purpose of the program is to provide non-government organisations across the Disability Services, Youth and Youth Justice Services, and Community Services sectors with a set of accredited teaching resources covering five common core competencies in the following:

Competency Elements
CHCCS405A Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
  1. Apply an awareness of culture as a factor in all human behaviour
  2. Contribute to the development of relationships based on cultural diversity
  3. Communicate effectively with culturally diverse persons
  4. Resolve cross-cultural misunderstandings
CHCCS301A Work within a legal and ethical framework
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of legislation and common law relevant to work role
  2. Follow the organisation’s policies and practices
  3. Work ethically
  4. Recognise and respond when the client’s rights and interests are not being protected
CHCCS402A Respond holistically to client issues
  1. Evaluate the range of issues impacting on the client and on the delivery of appropriate services
  2. Determine the course of action to be followed
  3. Establish interpersonal relationship with the client that will enable all issues to be addressed
  4. Provide a brief intervention as required
  5. Respond appropriately to people who are vulnerable and at significant risk including the children and young people
  6. Evaluate effectiveness of services provided to meet client needs
CHCCOM3C Utilise specialist communication skills to build strong relationships
  1. Identify appropriate communication strategies to meet the needs of clients and colleagues and build strong relationships
  2. Conduct effective communication with clients and staff
  3. Contribute to the development of effective communication strategies
  4. Represent the organisation to a range of groups
  5. Apply specific communication techniques to assist in resolving conflict
  6. Implement mechanisms that facilitate group discussions
CHCOHS301A Participate in workplace safety procedures
  1. Identify hazards and assess risks
  2. Follow procedures and strategies for risk control
  3. Contribute to OH&S in the workplace
CHCADMIN5C Work within the administration protocols of the organisation
  1. Complete workplace forms and documents
  2. Store and maintain organisational information
  3. Use and maintain equipment and machines
  4. Manage inquiries in accordance with organisational policy and protocol
CHCCS401A Facilitate cooperative behaviour
  1. Monitor behaviour of the client
  2. Use communication stategies to de-escalate conflict
  3. Respond to unacceptable behaviour
CHCORG3B Participate in the work environment
  1. Contribute to the effective operation of the workgroup
  2. Review and develop own work performance
  3. Work co-operatively with others
  4. Contribute to the development of policies, practices and structures of an organisation
